Researchers at New York University identified a protein called HHO5 that signals plants to stop absorbing nitrogen once their needs are met. The study, published in The Plant Cell, could help develop crops that require less fertiliser, reducing farming costs and pollution. The researchers identified gene regulators that are sensitive to different levels and types of nitrogen to uncover this.
