An international research team found a new compound of plutonium with an unexpected pentavalent oxidation state by accident. The team found it while trying to create plutonium dioxide nanoparticles using different precursors. They realised that a strange reaction took place during the formation of the nanoparticles, which hinted towards the never-observed-before form of the element.
