Scientists engineer first ever 'semi-synthetic' organism

US-based scientists have engineered the world's first stable semi-synthetic organism by expanding E. coli bacteria's genetic code to six letters using human-created DNA bases. While every living organism on Earth is formed by a four-letter DNA code represented by G, T, C and A, the DNA of the modified organisms are made with two additional synthetic bases, X and Y.
