Scientists explain delay in Colorado River carving Grand Canyon

New research in Science explains why the 11-million-year-old Colorado River only began carving the Grand Canyon recently. Using zircon crystal dating, geologists found that the river flowed into the now-extinct Bidahochi Lake for five million years. This "missing" period ended when the lake overflowed, rerouting water that eroded the iconic canyon and reshaped North American geography.
