Scientists find way to prevent gum disease by blocking bacterial signals
short by Sunny Sharma / on Saturday, 9 May, 2026
Scientists have found that mouth bacteria communicate through chemical signals that control plaque formation and gum disease risk. By blocking these signals with enzymes, researchers boosted beneficial bacteria and reduced disease-linked microbes tied to gum disease. They also found that oxygen levels change bacterial signalling, influencing whether healthy or harmful bacteria grow.
