A team led by researchers from the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy, including Postdoctoral Researcher Kai Yang and Associate Professor Xudong Sun, developed a model to explain this unique behavior. We could identify the physics driving these flares by applying what we have learned about the Sun to other, cooler stars, even though we could never see them directly.
