Scientists levitate objects using 'tornadoes of sound'

UK-based researchers have demonstrated that it is possible to trap objects using rapidly fluctuating acoustic beams which they described as "tornadoes of sound". The team was able to levitate a two-centimetre polystyrene sphere using ultrasonic waves. Sonic levitation could allow controlling drug capsules and implements within the body, and contactless assembly on production lines.
