Scientists from Sandia National Laboratories and Texas A&M University have witnessed metal heal itself for the first time. Researchers used a technique that pulled on ends of 40-nanometer-thick metal pieces about 200 times per second. A crack initially formed and spread, but 40 minutes into the experiment, the metal fused back together. The process occurs at nanoscale, the study said.
