Scientists plan to make food from thin air & urine in space
short by Swati Dubey / on Monday, 10 November, 2025
European Space Agency (ESA) has launched HOBI-WAN project to produce food from thin air and astronaut urine. Finland's Solar Foods has developed Solein, a powdered protein made through gas fermentation, using microbes that feed on CO2, hydrogen and electricity. In space, urea from urine will replace ammonia as the nitrogen source, enabling protein synthesis for future Moon and Mars missions.
