A DNA study has found that today’s pet cats descended from North African wildcats, not Near East ones as previously believed. Analysing 70 ancient cats over 10,000 years, researchers say true domestic cats reached Europe only 2,000 years ago via Roman maritime trade. The study shows domestication was complex, multi-regional, and far later than earlier theories suggested.
