Scientists turn corn into spider silk-inspired sustainable plastic
short by Neeraja Nath / on Saturday, 23 May, 2026
A Dutch-Chinese research team converted corn protein into a durable biopolymer inspired by spider silk. Using zein, a corn-processing byproduct, scientists reorganised protein molecules instead of chemically melting them. The alignment strengthened the material, enabling production of fibres, films and thin sheets called "plantymer". This could reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based plastics.
