Scientists use bacteria to make 'living' concrete that can heal itself

Scientists have created a 'living building material' (LMB) that can heal itself by introducing inert structural sand-hydrogel scaffold with Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002, a photosynthetic cyanobacterium. The bacteria in the material absorbs sunlight, nutrients, and carbon dioxide and releases calcium carbonate, the rigid compound found in seashells and cement.
