Scotland becomes first nation in UK to ban smacking of children

Scotland has become the first country in the United Kingdom to ban smacking of children, giving them the same protection from assault as adults. The change removes the defence of 'reasonable chastisement' from the law. "This outdated defence has no place in a modern Scotland. It can never be reasonable to strike a child," Maree Todd, Children's Minister, said.
