Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio has declared rape and sexual assault a national emergency after cases of sexual and gender-based violence doubled last year. Those convicted of raping minors would be sentenced to life in prison. Bio announced the formation of a police division to investigate reports of sexual violence and a special magistrate court that would fast-track cases.
