Sikkim was annexed into India on this day

Sikkim was annexed into India on May 16, 1975, as the 22nd state of the country. Before this, Sikkim was an independent monarchy, however, India managed its foreign affairs till 1962. Its merger happened after Sikkim Prime Minister Kazi Lhendup Dorjee appealed India for the same after conducting a referendum. Dorjee later became the first Chief Minister of Sikkim.
