Amid rising silver prices, government is examining steps to bring silver jewellery and artefacts under a mandatory hallmarking regime like gold, said Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Director General Sanjay Garg. Currently, silver is hallmarked on a voluntary basis. Hallmarked silver articles carry a Hallmark Unique Identification number, which allows buyers to verify purity through BIS database.
