Singpho tribe’s bamboo-smoked tea shaped India’s tea industry

In India, the Singpho tribe were making tea long before plantations existed, using bamboo-smoked leaves to prepare a drink called phalap. Later, British explorer Robert Bruce observed these practices in Assam, which helped lay the foundation for India’s globally renowned tea industry and its commercial expansion.
