Over 19 lakh individuals were employed across India’s scheduled commercial banks as of March 31, 2025, RBI data shows. Of these, 17.5% were employed in banks in Maharashtra alone. Along with Maharashtra, five other states: Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal and Gujarat are home to over half of India’s banking workforce in 2025.
