Smarter irrigation could cut groundwater use

Better irrigation scheduling could reduce unnecessary water releases from canal systems and lower farmers' dependence on groundwater. Research indicates that coordinating canal operations with crop water requirements and local conditions could save millions of cubic metres of water while improving the efficiency of irrigation systems in farming areas.
