Sony unveils world's first 48-megapixel smartphone sensor

Japanese multinational Sony has unveiled the IMX586 stacked CMOS image sensor for smartphones, which it claims has the world's highest pixel count with 48 megapixels. The sensor can be squeezed into a phone-sized 8.0 mm diagonal unit. The sensor rivals high-performance SLR cameras, making it possible to capture high-resolution images even with a smartphone.
