South India’s fertility decline is sharper than earlier estimates

Fertility rates in South India have fallen more sharply than earlier estimates, with new government data showing all five southern states now well below the population replacement level. The 2021 Sample Registration System report puts fertility in the region at 1.5–1.6 children per woman, lower than figures from the previous National Family Health Survey.
