Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav won Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat for the fifth time, beating BJP's Prem Singh Shakya by 94,389 votes. Mulayam earlier won from Mainpuri in 1996, 2004, 2009 and 2014 but vacated it in 2014 as he had won from Azamgarh too. His son and party president Akhilesh is the candidate from Azamgarh this time.
