The Supreme Court has ruled that special allowances given to employees will fall under 'basic wages' for calculation of provident fund (PF) contributions. As of now, the PF contribution is paid equally by the employer and the employee at 12% of the 'monthly pay'. 'Monthly pay' constitutes basic wages, dearness allowance, the cash value of food concession and retaining allowance.
