Sri Lanka extended its nationwide lockdown till September 6 amid a recent surge in coronavirus deaths. This comes after Sri Lanka recorded 209 deaths on Wednesday, its highest one-day jump in COVID-19 deaths so far. Sri Lanka has reported 8,157 COVID-19 deaths in total, with over 7,500 of them being recorded amid an ongoing third wave that began in April.
