Stanford's $3,000 robot Doggo does backflips without springs

Stanford students have developed a four-legged, dog-like manual robot 'Doggo', built under $3,000, that can jump, trot and perform backflips without using springs. It uses force-sensing external motors that continuously determine the force and torque levels needed for each movement. The team said they made Doggo open-source so that people could build it themselves on a relatively small budget.
