'Stop using calcium carbide to ripen fruits,' govt warns traders

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has warned traders not to use calcium carbide for artificial ripening of fruits, particularly during the mango season. The use of calcium carbide for ripening fruits has been banned under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011. FSSAI has permitted use of ethylene gas as a safer alternative for fruit ripening.
