A study by USTM’s Dr Kangkan Jyoti Sarma has documented 26 freshwater fish species in the Umiurem River near Shangpung, West Jaintia Hills — the first such record for the area. The research highlights Meghalaya’s rich ichthyofauna and calls for conservation of smaller rivers often overlooked in biodiversity protection efforts.
