Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that under his government, the dues to sugarcane farmers in UP have reduced from ₹14,000 crore to ₹700-₹800 crore. However, according to data from Cane Commissioner’s Office in Lucknow, sugar mills in the state owe dues of ₹5,795 crore to sugarcane farmers as of May 26, around eight times the amount mentioned by Modi.
