Sun blasts biggest solar flare in 4 years, causes radio blackout over Atlantic

The new sunspot AR2838 emitted the biggest solar flare, a powerful burst of radiation, in four years on July 3. The solar flare has been classified as an X1.5-class flare. X-class denotes the most intense flares. A pulse of X-rays ionised the top of Earth’s atmosphere and caused a shortwave radio blackout over the Atlantic Ocean.
