Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's wife, Asma, previously a breast cancer survivor, is now diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. She will undergo treatment and withdraw from engagements. Asma, born in Britain in 1975, had portrayed herself as a progressive rights activist. She supported her husband during the Syrian civil war.
