'Tau' protein tangles may predict brain shrinkage during Alzheimer's

California University researchers suggested that tangles of the protein 'tau' found inside the brain of Alzheimer's patients can be used to predict future brain shrinkage. Chemical changes cause 'tau' to form tangles that disrupt the cells in Alzheimer's patients, which have previously been linked to a loss of brain cells. Notably, drugs targeting tau tangles are currently in clinical trials.
