New half ice, half fire phase of matter found

Scientists at the US' Department of Energy's Brookhaven Lab have discovered a new phase of matter in a one-dimensional ferrimagnet. Named "half ice, half fire", it features a unique mix of electron spins: highly ordered 'cold' spins and highly disordered 'hot' ones. This phenomenon could one day result in applications in the energy and information technology industries, the scientists said.

Highway toll fees hiked by 4-5% across India from today

Sensex and Nifty suffered huge losses on Tuesday after they fell 1.8% and 1.5% due to market uncertainties caused by US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs, which'll take effect on Wednesday. Sensex dipped 1,400 points to reach close to 76,000 while Nifty fell 1.5% to 23,165.70. Nifty Realty and Consumer Durables were top losing sectoral indices, falling -3.11% and -2.5%.

2,700 people dead in Myanmar earthquake

The death toll from the massive earthquake in Myanmar has reached 2,719 and is expected to rise to over 3,000, the country's military leader Min Aung Hlaing said in a televised address. Aid groups in the worst-hit areas said there was an urgent need for shelter, food and water. Hlaing added that 4,521 people were injured, and 441 were missing.

Apple Intelligence launched for iPhone, iPad and MacBook users in India

Apple has launched Apple Intelligence for users in India. The AI features have been launched with iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4 updates. They'll be available on iPhone 15 Pro and later models, and iPad and MacBook's Air and Pro models powered by M1 or later chips. The features include Visual Intelligence (which can extract information from pictures).

Self-styled pastor Bajinder Singh gets life imprisonment in 2018 rape case

Bajinder Singh, a self-proclaimed Christian pastor, was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a woman, a case for which was filed in 2018. The victim alleged that Singh took her to his residence under the pretext of helping her move abroad. He raped her and also recorded the act, the victim alleged. A Punjab court had acquitted five other accused.

US President Donald Trump said that he heard India is "going to be dropping its tariffs very substantially" on US goods. This comes one day before reciprocal tariffs are set to take effect globally. "I said, 'Why didn't somebody do this a long time ago?' A lot of countries are going to be dropping their tariffs," Trump further said.
