The Berlin Wall, that divided the German capital into East Berlin and West Berlin, was opened for the first time on December 20, 1963. About 4,000 citizens of West Berlin reportedly crossed into East Berlin to visit relatives. The Berlin Wall was constructed in August 1961 to prevent the citizens of East Germany from escaping its communist regime.
