The British once rented out Bombay for £10 a year

King Charles II of England rented out Bombay (now Mumbai) to the East India Company in 1668 for an annual charge of £10. Prior to that, the British were given the town and island of Bombay in 1661, as 'dowry' for the marriage of King Charles II and Catherine of Braganza, sister of the King of Portugal.
