Maharaja Rajinder Singh of Patiala, born in 1872, ascended the throne at the age of four. While he was always loyal to the colonial rule, he refused to budge when he wanted to marry his love. Defying the British who were against this alliance, he married Florence Bryan, daughter of his Irish horse master, and persuaded her to embrace Sikhism.
