The 'Barbie' story started on a holiday trip in Europe which Ruth Handler and her 15-year-old daughter Barbara had taken together. While on the trip, Ruth spotted a 'Bild Lilli' (a mock doll meant for adults) and got 3 of those for herself with a thought in mind which later led to the formation of Mattel Inc in 1945.
