The Suez Canal, that links the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea, was inaugurated in Egypt on November 17, 1869. At the time of opening, the canal was only 25 feet deep and 200 to 300 feet wide at the surface. In its first year of operation, less than 500 ships navigated through it.
