A piano made out of cats, called Katzenklavier, is believed to have been invented in the 17th century. Historical descriptions state that the instrument consisted of a keyboard, with seven to nine cats held in cages corresponding to the pitch of their sounds. The cats' tails were pinned down and a key would slam a nail down into the tails.
