Thomas Edison proposed 'hello' as telephone greeting

Inventor Thomas Alva Edison, in a letter dated August 15, 1877, proposed the use of 'hello' as a greeting to start a telephone conversation. Edison had envisioned the telephone to be a permanently open line to parties at either end, and 'hello' could be used to start a conversation. Telephone, however, was invented by Alexander Graham Bell.
