TikTok's parent company ByteDance started a joint venture with a state-owned Chinese media firm. Under the deal, a subsidiary of ByteDance will own a 49% stake in the new company while Shanghai Dongfang Newspaper will own the majority stake. A spokesperson of ByteDance said, "The joint venture will focus on partnership in the digital rights of short videos."
