Tooth loss, not gum disease, linked to dementia risk

A 15-year cohort study in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease found no association between clinical periodontitis and dementia or mild cognitive impairment. However, greater tooth retention was linked to lower dementia risk. Men who developed cognitive decline had higher inflammatory markers, suggesting systemic inflammation and tooth loss may matter more for brain health than gum disease severity.
