While announcing sanctions against Iran's current Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, US President Donald Trump mistakenly said he was issuing the measures against former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Iran's founder and revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini died in 1989, and the country has since been led by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
