Twisted German nuclear fusion device achieves record plasma
short by Gaurav Shroff / on Wednesday, 27 June, 2018
The world's largest fusion device of the stellarator type, Germany's Wendelstein 7-X has achieved record fusion triple product, which combines plasma temperature, density and its confinement time. Instead of a simple donut shape as in tokamaks, stellarators use a twisted torus to confine plasma in magnetic field. The fusion product was achieved at an ion temperature of 40 million degrees.
