UN warns of rise of 'cybertorture' by states to target individuals

UN torture rapporteur Nils Melzer warned psychological torture was being exploited by states to bypass physical torture and may make way for "cybertorture". He said Internet could be used to systematically target people through "intimidation, harassment, surveillance, public shaming and defamation". He earlier raised concerns over Britain's treatment of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in prison.
