US bought Alaska for $7.2 million from Russia

The US formally took possession of Alaska on October 18, 1867, after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million. Russia wanted to sell the territory because of logistic problems in maintaining it, as well as the risk of losing it in battle with a rival such as Great Britain. Alaska is now the biggest state in the US.
