US changes stance on 2008 Russia-Georgia war for the 1st time

The US didn't join European allies in condemning Russia over 2008 war with Georgia at the UN for the first time. The conflict began when Georgia attacked South Ossetia. Russian forces pushed the Georgian troops back, and a French-mediated ceasefire was reached on August 16. Later, Russia recognised independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, another one of Georgia's former regions.
