The United States Navy is developing an electromagnetically propelled ballistic missile system named Railgun. Electromagnetic energy propels a projectile along a set of copper-alloy rails, instead of traditional gunpowder and electric propulsion. The 25-megawatt power consuming railgun can shoot rounds expected to travel at approximately 9,200 kmph and cover around 160 kilometres.
