US suicide rate rose 12% after Marilyn's death

The suicide rate in the United States increased by about 12% a month after actress and model Marilyn Monroe's death, at the age of 36, on August 5, 1962. One suicide victim left a note saying, “If the most wonderful, beautiful thing in the world has nothing to live for, then neither must I.”
