The US will reduce the number of its troops to 2,500 in both Afghanistan and Iraq by January 15 next year, Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller said. There are currently around 4,500 US service members in Afghanistan and 3,000 in Iraq. However, the move was opposed by the Democratic Party, whose lawmakers described it as a threat to national security.
