The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), also known as the Soviet Union, was established on December 30, 1922. USSR, the successor to the Russian Empire, was the world's first country based on Marxist socialism. Governed by the Communist Party, USSR was a single-party state whose capital was Moscow. It was dissolved in 1991 following the collapse of its government.
